On Friday, January 10, the San Francisco Chronicle ran an article about Joel Arquillos, who teaches social studies at Galileo Academy of Science & Technology, and was the first recipient of the 826 Valencia Teacher of the Month Award.
Please read below for guidelines to submit your choices for our February Teacher of the Month. The deadline is Saturday, February 15.
The criteria: a combination of dedication and innovation, and an overall commitment to challenging students to excel. There are so many students who have had their minds set aglow by a teacher’s own zest for life and learning, and we’d like to do a very small part in rewarding them.
Potential award winners need to have been in the classroom for four full years.
Teachers must be nominated by one previous or current student, and one adult past college age, but the nomination may be in any form—letters of support, pictures, videotapes, anything, as long as we have specific examples of the teacher’s impact.
Each honoree will be asked to choose a student to interview him/her for the 826 Valencia website. In this interview they will share their ideas, the lessons they’ve taught and learned themselves, and their keys to success in the classroom. The teachers will be honored at a ceremony at the end of the year, hosted by 826 and attended by Bay Area educators, 826 friends, students and parents.
If you’d like to nominate a teacher you know, you can drop off or send materials of any kind to:

The deadline for submissions is the fifteenth of each month. We will announce the winner by the end of each month.
Winners will be chosen by a committee composed of 826 Valencia employees, tutors at 826 Valencia, a Bay Area teacher and student, and a community member. Nominees are welcomed from any Bay Area community. We’re sorry but recommendations can’t be taken via e-mail or over the phone. Please submit a contact phone number along with your nomination; we’d like to be able to call and discuss the nominee with you and others.
