826 is looking for a programs assistant

826 Valencia is looking for an educator to join our team as a full-time programs assistant. This person will manage educational programs for students ages 6-18. Do you have the perfect person in mind? If so, please encourage them to apply!

This person will:

  • work closely with the programs director and the other programs assistant to implement programs at 826 with 826 tutors
  • maintain ongoing volunteer list and schedules interviews for new volunteers
  • manage the workshops program, including training of volunteer-teachers, creation of the workshop schedule, and management of the student registration process
  • provide support for field trips and drop-in tutoring program
  • support outreach to local public schools and the public school teachers
  • maintain student, teacher, and volunteer evaluations
  • coordinate tutor training sessions and volunteer appreciation events
  • recruit, train, and oversee interns
  • coordinate informational and/or educational community events
  • manage the logistics of the scholarship program
  • participate in all 826 Valencia's events

Other qualifications include:

  1. Strong people skills.
  2. Excellent organizational skills; ability to multi-task.
  3. Excellent oral and writing skills.
  4. A passion to improve literacy in students.
  5. Experience working with groups of teachers on collaborative projects.
  6. A deep commitment to student success.
  7. Well versed in the issues around diversity in public school settings.
  8. A very strong work ethic with the ability to manage projects successfully without a lot of supervision.
  9. A love of books and publishing.

May additionally have/be:

  1. Experience working with a nonprofit organization.
  2. Experience presenting curricular and reform ideas at conferences.
  3. Able to speak another language, preferably Spanish or Mandarin/Cantonese.
  4. Experience in the classroom as a public school teacher.
  5. Experience organizing large number of people moving in many directions.
