Revenge of the Book Eaters is named after a story by an 826 student. It is part of a series of six concerts in six cities to raise money for children's literacy programs in the 826 writing centers across the country. These events, which comprise the Revenge of the Book Eaters tour, include a line-up of celebrated musicians, comedians and authors.
On Wednesday night the tour stopped in at the Beacon in NYC where 826 founder Dave Eggers along with Sarah Vowell, Jon Stewart, Sufjan Stevens, David Byrne and many others put on a show to settle the question: words or music—which is better? We are still not sure, but one major highlight of the evening was a duet by Sufjan Stevens and David Byrne performing Lefty Frizzell's "Saginaw, Michigan".
Thursday night the show landed in Chicago with host Ira Glass leading the way. The night featured perfomances by Ben Gibbard, John Roderick of the Long Winters and a surprise appearance by Fred Armisen.
