Gateway High School and 826 pair up for this year's Young Authors' Project

We look forward to the Young Authors' Project every year. For the next three months, students at Gateway High School will work alongside a team of 826 tutors to craft, write, and revise their pieces for this year's book: San Francisco's only city guide written by teens for everyone! The final product will be professionally printed and distributed nationwide. Not only will these dedicated and talented students supply the content, but they will also be key players in the design, layout, and editorial processes.

Past book projects have included a collection of illustrated children's stories and a compilation of students' essays about immigration and being a first generation American. This year, we are working with Gateway High seniors to create a teen travel guide to San Francisco with some additional help from Jay Cooke, commissioning editor of The Lonely Planet guides and a San Francisco resident for the last ten years.

Why a travel book? Gateway's unique student demographic represents students from almost all neighborhoods in San Francisco, and this makes for a great opportunity for these young writers to tell others across the nation and beyond about this city from their own distinct perspectives. This city hosts over 16 million visitors a year and Gateway students will expertly introduce these tourists to the San Francisco that lies beyond Fisherman's Wharf, the cable cars, and The Golden Gate Bridge.

What is there to do in this town if you don't have much money? When and where are the best neighborhood festivals? Which local activist groups are making positive changes in the city? Where is the most amazing graffiti art? Where is the tastiest pupuseria? What is a pupuseria? These questions and many more shall be answered from some of those who know this city best—- the seniors of Gateway High.
