826 Valencia is proud to announce that Kathy Cantrall of Everett Middle School is our Teacher of the Month this May.
Kathy Cantrall is a great educator, bringing excitement and energy to the learning process and the community as a whole. Her positivity and optimism inspire her students to make tremendous improvements in themselves and their community.
She has always been a favorite of the Eighth Grade Owls, and they're always sad to leave her nest. When students need a teacher perspective for the Straight-Up News, they often seek Kathy out. Since she's a social studies teacher, she is their source for what's going on in the world. Every year, Kathy is also a huge part of Peace Day.
She created the Industrial Revolution project, an assignment where students research important figures from the Industrial Revolution. Students love this project.
Kathy also helps put on the Colonial Faire every fall. One colleague, Emilie Gantt, said, "She makes social studies relevant and hands-on through role-playing, debates, and a lot of co-operative learning." In a school that is 65% English Language Learner students, her efforts to make history culturally relevant for all students are particularly remarkable.
She is active in creating a community of educators who strive to improve the lives of students. Here at 826 Valencia, our tutors have loved working on her creative projects and constantly request to work with her again. She's been a longtime mentor for future teachers, many of whom attend San Francisco State and have since gone on to own their own classrooms with Kathy's inspiration.
Despite her formidable accomplishments, she is always willing to bring her light-hearted side to work with her. Dressing up as a Revolutionary War soldier for a history lesson and performing a rap for the student teacher talent show takes courage and commitment.
Emilie Gantt from Everett says that she is "one of our greatest assets"; we at 826 Valencia agree. Thank you to Kathy Cantrall, for all your hard work.
