We are happy to announce that Norman Mattox, who teaches sixth grade math and science at James Lick Middle School, is our January Teacher of the Month! Teachers, students, and administrators agree that Mr. Mattox deserves this honor because of his commitment to his field.
He has participated in various district-wide leadership initiatives, including the Middle School Teacher Leadership Initiative and the Strategic Education Research Partnership. An inspiration to both his students and other members of the faculty, Mr. Mattox happily shares his expertise with new teachers, often allowing them to observe his classes. At the same time, he is always open to collaborating with other teachers, asking for advice, and honing his teaching skills.
Mr. Mattox is extremely committed to his students. He inspires and intrigues them, emphasizing the importance of learning while still making it fun. "Perhaps his biggest asset as a teacher is his genuine love of our children," said Bita Nazarian, the principal of James Lick. "Every time I walk into his classroom and see students jumping out of their seats to stand and explain their reasoning, I am reminded of how Mr. Mattox creates a scholarly classroom environment." Mr. Maddox challenges his students, letting them know that if they want something, they have to work for it. One student named Lisa, reflecting on her year with Mr. Mattox, said, "He also became more than just a great teacher, he became a mentor, my mentor. He helped me push my limits until I succeeded thoroughly, which I did, and I continue doing."
As Teacher of the Month, Mr. Mattox will receive $1,500 in cash to use as he pleases. In addition, we're excited to give him gift certificates from our generous friends at the Barber Lounge and the Sports Basement. Thank you, Mr. Mattox, for being such a role model to your students, fellow teachers, and your community!
