In honor of Nathan Jillson, we are offering a scholarship to be awarded in the spring for students entering college in the fall. The requirements are as follows:
- The applicant must be a graduating senior.
- The applicant must demonstrate financial need.
- The applicant must live in the Bay Area.
- The applicant must demonstrate intent to enroll in an institution of higher learning, which could be a 2- or 4-year college or vocational school.
- The applicant should have an extracurricular interest in the written word.
The scholarship is a one-time grant of $10,000. A different student will receive the award each year.
Applicants for the Nathan Jillson Memorial Scholarship should send the following materials (please number each section of your application accordingly):
- A top sheet with your name, names of family members, home address, phone, and e-mail address. Also include where you are applying for college, if you’ve been accepted anywhere already, and which college is your first choice. (When you are accepted into a college, please send an email with the heading "Scholarship-College Acceptance.")
- A recent picture of you with your family.
- A one page essay telling us a bit about yourself and your financial need that we cannot learn by reading your submitted works.
- Two pieces of writing of no less than three pages. There is no limit to the length of the submitted material, but the minimum is three pages, double-spaced and typed. There are no guidelines for the submitted work, and the material need not be written specifically for this application.
- One reference from any teacher or mentor. This endorsement can be one previously used for other purposes.
