The students kept asking when are the "old" people going to get here. Of course, I told them it wasn't good manners to call our visitors "old" people. They are adults, not "old" people. They can range in age from 21 through 100. The students corrected me and said maybe they're 18 years old. Okay. Enough!
Our much appreciated guests arrived promptly and were put to work at 11:00-ish. I had made a list of singles (one student) and doubles (two students) prior to their arrival. The task was to help these students to summarize information from a nonfiction article, pulling out main ideas with supporting details. Everyone went to work immediately. The students rapidly warmed up to our visitors.
One of my more vocal students, Alan, was left unattached. However, Andrew was kind enough to adopt him into his group. The rest of my unattached students were quickly assimiliated into other groups.
Overall, it was an incredible experience. Kids were laughing, discussing, writing, and the adults were interested and pleased with the students. What a treat! It was a great connection!
