Don George (moderator), is the Global Travel Editor at Lonely Planet and author of the Lonely Planet Guide To Travel Writing. An accomplished travel writer, George has published more than 600 articles in magazines and newspapers across the globe. He has edited four anthologies of travel writing, including The Kindness of Strangers and A House Somewhere: Tales of Life Abroad. George is the co-founder and chairman of the annual Book Passage Travel Writers and Photographers Conference, and a visiting lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley, Graduate School of Journalism.
For the last decade John Flinn has been the editor of, and columnist for, the San Francisco Chronicle Travel section. He's traveled on assignment to more than 20 countries on six continents and written more than 700 travel stories and columns. Flinn recently was named the bronze winner of the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalist of the Year award by the Society of American Travel Writers.
Larry Habegger, Executive Editor of Travelers’ Tales, has been a syndicated columnist since 1985 and his articles have appeared in several renowned publications, including the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and Travel and Leisure. An experienced writing teacher and coach, Habegger teaches regularly at writing conferences and workshops and focuses on the craft and art of the personal travel story. He has edited many books, including Hyenas Laughed at Me and Now I Know Why and Best Travel Writing 2005 and 2004.
Amanda Jones, is a renowned travel writer and photographer whose work can be seen in Travel and Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Town and Country, the London Sunday Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and many other publications. Her short stories have been published in several travel writing anthologies, and she also works on story development of National Geographic Television. Jones’s photography series, Timeless, (photographs of African tribal peoples) was exhibited at the United Nations Film Festival. She is currently working on a coffee table book called Potentia.
Elaine Lee is a freelance writer who specializes in ethnic and women’s travel, and contributes stories and articles to such publications as Essence, Ms., Heart and Soul, and Upscale. She is the author of Go Girl: The Black Woman’s Book of Travel and Adventure. Her work has also appeared in several travel writing anthologies and collections. In 1999 Lee and colleague Pamela Michaels developed the Bay Area’s first travel radio show, which still airs monthly on Northern California Station KPFA-FM.
In addition to reflecting on the writing process, the panelists will address issues related to the publishing aspects of writing, such as contacting agents and working with publishing houses. Each panelist comes to 826 with a unique experience and approach to travel writing. No details will be spared, all pertinent secrets will be revealed.
