Join us for this evening seminar on the process of how to start a magazine. Moderator Lisa Jervis, former publisher of Bitch magazine, will lead an expert panel through a discussion of the work and joy involved in the creation of a new literary publication.
About the moderator:
Lisa Jervis is the founding editor and publisher of Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture, a national nonprofit quarterly magazine offering feminist commentary on our intensely mediated world. She is also a founding board member of the media training and advocacy organization Women in Media and News. Her work has appeared in numerous magazines and books, including Ms., the San Francisco Chronicle, Utne, Mother Jones, the Women's Review of Books, Bust, Hues, Salon, Girlfriends, Punk Planet, Body Outlaws (Seal Press), LiP: Informed Revolt, and The Bust Guide to the New Girl Order (Penguin). She is the co-editor of Young Wives' Tales: New Adventures in Love and Partnership (Seal Press) and BitchFest: Ten Years of Cultural Criticism from the Pages of Bitch Magazine. She speaks widely on feminism, media criticism, and the independent press.
About the panelists:
Shoshana Berger is the Editor-in-Chief of ReadyMade, a "bimonthly print magazine for people who like to make stuff" and "see the flicker of invention in everyday objects." She is an established author and has contributed to several publications including Wired Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, Spin, Salon, The San Francisco Chronicle, Business 2.0, and Travel and Leisure, over the course of her career. She also wrote the book ReadyMade: How to Make Almost Everything and contributed to the books Before the Mortgage, Worldchanging, and Tease.
Elizabeth Gettelman is managing editor at Mother Jones, where she manages both the bimonthly print magazine and the daily website. In a former life she ran writing programs for young women, and wrote a how-to basketball book for girls. She's freelanced some, including for the Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, and Le Monde.fr. For stories she's broken a 17-year meatless streak with wild boar and venison sausage, and has milked a cow or two. She spends her free time either outside or in various corners of her craft room.
Neil Stevenson has edited several magazines in the UK, including the long-running style/fashion monthly The Face and club culture title Mixmag. He has also worked for Dazed and Confused, Wallpaper and various other glossy magazines. In 2000 he launched the anti-celebrity email and website Popbitch, which enjoyed the distinction of having been sued by both David Beckham and his wife Victoria. Neil is currently taking a break from media, and is working for Bay Area design firm IDEO.
This seminar promises to be an exciting and informative experience for aspiring and literary-minded entrepreneurs.
