Student Writing
Alcatraz

By Daisy Guzman
Age 11, Moscone Elementary

Daisy Guzman wrote this poem with the help of Devin Roth, an 826 Valencia tutor, for a school assignment about San Francisco history.

It’s scary to live on an island surrounded by water.
Ghosts haunt the island and the people who visit.
The ghosts are old and rusty.
And so are the ancient bars on the cells.

The island is like the jungle with no place to escape.
You are trapped by cold water and sinking sand.
You’re stuck, hungry, and worried.
There is no place to go and there will never be.
