It’s the 100 Club!

After the wrap of each school semester, 826 Valencia honors a select group of stand-out volunteers who have contributed a significant amount of time and energy to our organization. To thank our dedicated crew from this past year, we threw two very special 100 Club celebrations, commemorating the end of the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 school semesters. Each 100 Club comprises approximately 100 volunteers who’ve logged the highest number of service hours per semester.

We held our Winter 100 Club Celebration on January 29, 2015, in the Kanbar Forum of the freshly redesigned Exploratorium. Throughout the night guests sparked new friendships and celebrated old ones as they enjoyed a delicious tamale dinner from Mijita and La Palma, cheered one another with brews from New Belgium Brewing Company, and devoured delectable desserts by Miette. During our activity portion of the night, our whip-smart volunteers and interns contested in a game of trivia and got to flaunt their mad knowledge by answering questions about our beloved City by the Bay, teen pop culture, classic Pirate lore, and all things 826. Champions of the evening’s Trivia Night received passes to visit the new Exploratorium, and each volunteer was gifted their own Trivia Night pencil pouch filled with kid-inspired writing tools—sparkly pencils and animal eraser toppers—inspired by their time on the ground at 826 Valencia.

For our Summer 100 Club Celebration on June 9, 2015, we toasted our most tried and true volunteers and interns at Dear Mom. We (unexpectedly) watched the Golden State Warriors battle their way toward NBA championship, and challenged our friends to a good ol’ game of people bingo. Volunteers made new discoveries about one another while interviewing their fellow 826ers about quirky personality traits such as Who here experiences synesthesia? (we quickly learned that no one in our volunteer pool actually experiences this sensation!), Who knows the name of our beloved Pirate Store puffer fish, and Who has played Mr./Mrs. Blue (unwillingly) (most of us).
