We’re gearing up for the 2016 Young Authors’ Book Project, kicking off in January! The YABP is one of our most in-depth tutoring experiences, and it’s a chance for tutors form meaningful, one-on-one connections with students as they become published authors over the course of five weeks.
We’re returning to John O’Connell High School for this YABP, which will meet twice a week from January 11 – February 12. We’ll be working with two integrated ninth and tenth grade Biology and Language Arts classes, in which each student will write, revise, and polish a piece that uses their knowledge of ecosystems to respond creatively and personally to these central questions: How do we influence our environment, and how does our environment influence us? How can we use our power to affect positive change?
The collection will then be edited by a student and volunteer editorial board, professionally printed and sold in bookstores nationwide. We’ll celebrate with a reading and release party in May. It’s a volunteering experience not to miss. Here’s what one of last year’s tutors had to say:
“The entire experience was wonderful. {The project} gives personal attention to young people to help them examine themselves and their lives, develop deeper and more meaningful relationship to themselves and their world, and find their own voices. Loved meeting some of the other tutors too!”
We ask all tutors to commit to a regular schedule for all ten sessions of this project (tutoring twice a week for five weeks). If you’re a registered volunteer already, head on over to the volunteer calendar to sign up for each session. If you’re not registered yet, fill out an application today to start off your 826 tutoring experience with this fun project.
