Author Luis J. Rodriguez visits after-school tutoring

The writing lab was packed with tutors, parents, and students who paused in their homework for a reading by the award-winning and best-selling author, poet, and community peace activist on Wednesday, December 7. Luis J. Rodriguez  read excerpts from one of his children’s books, América Is Her Name, and then stayed for a question and answer session. Students asked everything from where he drew his inspiration and when he knew he was a writer to how many children he had and what exactly were all of their names and ages. Parents asked for advice for young writers and educators, and the author was patient and thoughtful in all of the answers he gave. Rodriguez filled our writing lab with beautiful words and advice, and we wish him the best with his newest book, a memoir called It Calls You Back: An Odyssey Through Love, Addiction, Revolutions, and Healing.
