Impact Report FY24-25: 826 Valencia Tutors

Our proven model has shown that individualized attention can lead to great leaps in learning, and it takes a community to provide this level of support. We rely on our volunteers, interns, service learners, and AmeriCorps Associates to provide consistent tutoring in schools and at our Writing Centers. Last year, despite federal cuts to the AmeriCorps program, we retained all of our Associates through the end of the school year.

As part of our workforce development initiative, we offer coaching and training to interns and AmeriCorps members with the goal of creating a strong, diverse tutor-to-teacher pipeline that supports students in our programs. These efforts shape a teacher workforce that champions effective writing instruction and reflects the student body of San Francisco.

Working with 826 Valencia reignited my passion for creative writing and working with children … I am truly grateful to 826 Valencia for helping me secure a stronger idea of what I wish to accomplish throughout my career.

Some of the best parts of my week are spent with young people in the Tenderloin Center, trying to remember the difference between alliteration and assonance. Their energy and creativity are inspiring, and always leave me feeling more hopeful and buoyant than before.

📝 💞 Volunteers are at the core of how we serve students. You don’t need to be an expert writer. You do need a deep belief in the students we serve and an eagerness to learn together. You can learn more about volunteering here.
