Joelle Chien, an 826 Valencia student, examines racism against Asian Americans

A student from our Mission Bay Youth Leadership Advisory Board, Joelle Chien, recently had a piece of writing featured in the June/July issue of The Commonwealth. Her piece talks about the public’s reaction towards Asians in America because of COVID-19, with a focus on reactions that she observed at her high school, Lowell.

She says, “Still, despite the deeply hurtful experiences that have accompanied this virus, the current situation can be used to produce something good in the midst of the fear and anger. This event has finally opened the eyes of the public and the media to the similar racism Asian-Americans face every day, whether a pandemic is raging or not.”
