When did you first begin your volunteer work with 826 Valencia’s Communications department? What inspired you to join our community?
I started volunteering in November 2024. I was looking for a worthy local organization, and a friend suggested 826 Valencia because my professional background is in writing and editing. As it turned out, there was an immediate and ongoing need for event photography and podcast editing, which I’m skilled at, too.
What are your top 2 favorite pictures that you have taken for us, and why?
It’s always difficult to choose a favorite shot after having taken hundreds of photos, but these two images spring to mind.
These students look intense as they tune out the hubbub in the classroom and work on a project together.
This student looks elated, and perhaps a little relieved, after reading his story to an audience of parents and peers.
As a photographer, what moments do you find yourself naturally drawn to at 826 Valencia?
I’m drawn to moments where students interact with one another. The more animated they are, the better. Students looking pensive as they read or write by themselves—perhaps curled up in a comfy chair—provide opportunities for me to carefully compose a shot, but I love it when spontaneous, expressive moments convey the enjoyment of learning something or the thrill of reading one’s story aloud. Those shots are hardest to get because they’re fleeting and unpredictable.
What hobbies or creative pursuits do you enjoy outside of volunteering at 826 Valencia?
I enjoy street photography. I like to photograph street scenes and interesting architectural settings during random photo walks in San Francisco. I also enjoy the spontaneity of photographing people at public events like street fairs and Downtown First Thursdays. I post my favorite shots on Instagram (stefan.photograph).
Do you have any advice for new 826 Valencia creative volunteers?
Go with the flow. My photo assignments from 826 Valencia put me in situations that require me to think on my feet. Sometimes the lighting isn’t great, the room isn’t conducive to unobtrusively moving around to get the best shot, or there are visual distractions to consider. Those challenges help me improve my skills.
What is one place in the city that never fails to inspire you?
I am entranced whenever I pass by Dolores Park, whether it’s on foot or on Muni. Of course, the view of the city from the top of the park is iconic, but it’s the people who visit on any given day, and in all kinds of weather, who inspire me. I admire the diversity they represent in the city I call home.
