Our May 2025 Co-Teachers of the Month are Shawn Chi and Jon Freeman

We are delighted to announce our May 2025 Co-Teachers of the Month! Shawn Chi and Jon Freeman are both 9th grade teachers at Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School. We are honored to recognize Mr. Chi and Mr. Freeman for their unwavering dedication to their students, school, and community! 

Mr. Shawn Chi

Mr. Shawn Chi is a truly exemplary educator who has not only mastered the Ethnic Studies curriculum but also imparts it with a contagious enthusiasm that captivates his students. His teaching style is a balanced blend of genuine care and high expectations, encouraging each student to strive for their fullest academic potential.  

Having begun his journey at Burton as a student teacher, Mr. Chi’s long-standing connection to the school and its community shines through, showcasing his unwavering dedication as a proud Puma. His innovative approach to technology sets him apart; he is often the go-to colleague for troubleshooting tech issues, making him an invaluable asset to the Burton staff.  

Mr. Chi’s presence is truly magnetic, with students drawn to his classroom during lunch breaks—a wonderful testament to his popularity and the affection they hold for him. His knack for creating a welcoming and engaging environment allows him to build meaningful relationships with his students, solidifying his role as a vital member of every group he participates in. Through his tireless efforts and inspiring leadership, Mr. Chi continuously enriches the educational experience of everyone at Burton.

Mr. Jon Freeman

Throughout this academic year, Mr. Freeman has done an incredible job managing a diverse range of courses, showing remarkable ease and grace in his teaching. As a bilingual teacher, Mr. Freeman has played a vital role in building meaningful relationships, not just with his students but also with their families, creating connections that truly enhance the educational experience.  

His knack for cultivating strong and positive relationships within the school community is commendable, and he has quickly become a beloved figure among both students and parents. He approaches his work with a reflective mindset, always considering the best ways to support and engage his students’ learning. With a genuine passion for innovation, he actively seeks to enrich his classroom with new and exciting activities that inspire a love for learning.  

There are even mornings when students excitedly gather outside Mr. Freeman’s classroom door, full of enthusiasm and anticipation, eager to chat with him before the school day begins. This eagerness truly reflects the positive impact he has made at Burton.
