One of my favorite things so far has been bonding with the kids over hello kitty. Since I was young I’ve been obsessed with her and it warms my little heat to know that she is also deeply cherished with the younger generations. I often wear my favorite headband to work which is hello kitty themed and that always sparks crazy enthusiasm from the kids. I love it !!!!
What inspired you to join our community?
What inspired me to join the 826 Valencia community is deeply rooted in my own experiences as a Black woman who grew up in an environment lacking diversity among teachers. I know firsthand how crucial it is for under-resourced kids to see themselves reflected in their educators and to receive individualized support that respects their unique backgrounds and stories. 826’s mission resonates with me because it actively promotes and celebrates diversity in educational spaces, ensuring that every child feels valued and empowered. I’m passionate about creating a nurturing environment where students can express themselves freely and develop their voices, knowing that their differences are not just acknowledged but celebrated. Joining this community feels like a perfect alignment with my values, and I’m excited to contribute to a mission that uplifts and inspires young writers from all walks of life.
What hobbies do you enjoy when you’re not volunteering at 826?
I like to call myself a mermaid because when I am not at 826 you can catch me in the in ocean either swimming or surfing. I began my surfing this summer while living in a small beach town on the coast of Mexico. Since then, it has been one of my favorite hobbies that I’ve taken on this year. There truly is no greater feeling than being with Mother Nature in the ocean, catching waves and being with people who support your journey.
Any advice for new 826 Valencia volunteers?
As a new volunteer at 826 Valencia, I heavily suggest embracing the creativity and fun that the space fosters—your enthusiasm can really inspire the kids. Also, take the time to listen and connect with each student. On elf the most important things I’ve learned so far is that building relationships is key; they’ll appreciate your genuine interest. Moreover, Adapting my teaching strategies at 826 Valencia has been a game changer for connecting with the kids. Don’t be scared or intimidated to try new approaches if initially it didn’t work out. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned about tutoring is that it’s all about continuously adjusting your approach. Some days strategies may work and other they may not – but get creative with how you engage and inspire the students – you’ll be surprised at what you can come up with especially with such an amazing and supportive staff to collaborate with. Most importantly, remember to have fun—celebrating their successes, no matter how small, will make your experience all the more rewarding!
If you could transform into any literary creature for a day (dragon, unicorn, traveling pufferfish, etc.), what would it be and why?
Unsurprisingly, I would love to transform into Hello Kitty for a day. I believe that she embodies kindness, friendship, and positivity. Plus, I’d get to rock that cute bow and enjoy some delicious treats in Sanrio-style cafes! It would be a day of pure whimsy and heartwarming interactions!
