Meet our September Volunteer of the Month

Our volunteers are like lighthouses in the wave-filled ocean of life. We’ve been especially thankful for Amy Sheth, our September volunteer of the month, as we navigate new waters in the Mission Bay and Bayview neighborhoods. Read on to learn more about the ways our volunteers help to establish our newest programs!

1. What is one of your favorite moments (memories, experiences or anecdotes!) from volunteering with 826 Valencia?

I have so many wonderful moments from volunteering with 826! One of them would definitely be helping one of our young students with their math homework. I’m horrible at math, and to be able to learn alongside her and help her understand the problem was amazing. To see the joy on her face when she realized she understood what she was doing is something I’ll remember forever.

2. What led you to become part of our volunteer community?

I moved to SF a few years ago and was looking for a way to give back to the community. I’m passionate about helping the younger generation learn the value of good communication and this seemed like a great fit. I love the mission of 826 and the self-confidence and skill set they’re passing down.

3. Given a choice of the three, which would you choose: pirates, pufferfish, or woodland creatures? Why?

Oh, man, hard choice! I would have to say pirates. I love the clothes and jewelry and songs and language! Arrgghhh, matey!

4. What would we find you doing when not you’re not volunteering at 826?

Traveling with my husband and our extended family, or discovering new neighborhoods and workouts in SF.

5. What is a piece of advice you would give a new 826 volunteer?

It’s okay to ask for help. Most days are fun and engaging, but those days where you need some extra help, raise your hand!
