We are excited to announce our February 2026 Teacher of the Month, Deirdre Fitzgerald! Ms. Fitzgerald is a dedicated third-grade teacher at Tenderloin Community School (TCS), exemplifying unwavering commitment to her students, school, and community. We celebrate her for inspiring those around her!
Her unwavering dedication to TCS is clearly illustrated by her impressive decade-long commitment, which serves as a powerful testament to her loyalty and perseverance. Throughout these years, her remarkable courage shines through as she passionately advocates for both our school and the broader community. She consistently raises her voice to address the pressing challenges that SFUSD teachers confront today. Her efforts not only inspire those around her but also foster a sense of unity and resilience among her peers.
Ms. Fitzgerald skillfully accommodates the diverse needs of her students by providing flexible seating and setting options. Students can choose from traditional seats, stools, cushions, or sensory cushions, allowing them to find the best environment for their learning. She also encourages movement beyond traditional desks, offering spaces such as cozy corners with couches and tables, the rug, and the class library.
Last year, she also spoke at our Storytellers’ Showcase and has been actively involved in 826 Valencia’s Bessie book projects, including collaborations with 826 Valencia and Precita Eyes.
Ms. Fitzgerald skillfully tailors her lessons to captivate her students’ interests while integrating relevant current events into her curriculum. She approaches sensitive topics with courage and sensitivity, openly discussing critical issues that resonate deeply with her students and their families, such as the impacts of ICE raids on immigrant communities and the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinians. By fostering an environment of open dialogue, she encourages students to reflect on these complex issues, promoting critical thinking and empathy within her classroom.
