We are excited to announce our March 2026 Teacher of the Month, Charity Ramilo! Ms. Ramilo is a dedicated third-grade teacher at Bessie Carmichael School / Filipino Education Center, exemplifying unwavering commitment to her students, school, and community. We celebrate her for inspiring those around her!
Ms. Ramilo exemplifies dedication and attentiveness in her role as an educator, consistently demonstrating a profound commitment to understanding and supporting her students. At the beginning of each school year, she promptly provides 826 Valencia staff with extensive and detailed information about her students, including their specific accommodations, unique learning styles, personal interests, and home situations. This invaluable insight is a testament to her individualized approach, highlighting her genuine effort to know each student on a personal level. Moreover, she takes the initiative to share this vital knowledge with all the stakeholders in the school community, ensuring that everyone is well-informed and able to provide the best support for her students.
Her familial connection to Bessie Carmichael runs deep, as her grandfather, affectionately known as Lolo, was instrumental in establishing the first Filipino language program in the South of Market (SOMA) area many decades ago. Building on this legacy, Ms. Ramilo passionately dedicates herself to preserving Filipino culture and language within both the school and the SOMA community. She plays a pivotal role in the World Language Elementary School (WLES) program at Bessie and actively engages with Galing Bata, a Filipino Education Center that offers enriching after-school and summer programs. Her involvement does not stop there; she tirelessly organizes and leads numerous educational and cultural events throughout the school year, such as parol-making workshops, spirited sing-alongs, and the beloved annual Flores De Mayo celebration, fostering a vibrant sense of community and cultural pride.
In the classroom, Ms. Ramilo excels at incorporating her students’ interests into her curriculum, creating a dynamic and engaging learning environment. She skillfully tailors her lessons around subjects that ignite her students’ enthusiasm, designed to be both interactive and flexible. This allows her students to express their individuality by showcasing their unique talents and interests through various assignments and projects.
Moreover, Ms. Ramilo is a recognized figure in the broader educational community. Last year, she had the honor of speaking at the 826 Valencia Storytellers’ Showcase, where she shared her passion for storytelling and education. Her previous collaborations with 826 Valencia have also left a lasting impact, particularly during Bessie’s book projects that involved partnerships with the Precita Eyes Mural Arts Center. These initiatives not only enriched the students’ learning experiences but also strengthened community ties through art and literature. Her unwavering commitment to her students and the community is truly commendable and deeply appreciated.
