Students highlight local heroes

This summer, students in the Local Heroes workshop at 826 Valencia interviewed everyday members of the community who turned out to be not so everyday.

This summer, students in the Local Heroes workshop at 826 Valencia interviewed everyday members of the community who turned out to be not so everyday. From community-minded artists to nurses to nonprofit leaders, these heroes have made their neighborhoods safer and happier places, and they have changed lives. You can read students’ pieces about their local heroes in our Student Writing Gallery. Congratulations to all of the student authors, and thank you to Mark de la Viña for teaching the workshop, with support from Abner Morales and Josselyn Bonilla.

This piece was written during the summer 2011 workshop “Local Heroes,” which was taught by Mark de la Viña. Stay tuned for another session of this class in early spring of 2012.
