Tiarri Washington, an 826 student, wins New York Times podcast contest

One of our students, Tiarri Washington, age 13, was recently named one of the winners of The New York Times’ third annual Student Podcast Contest. Her piece, titled “The Secret of the Fenced Castle” is a powerful examination of a trip she took to visit her father in prison.

She says, “As I looked at the big, dreary castle I wondered why this castle was so different from the ones I had seen before. No alligators yapping in a river, no poisonous thrown bushes. As we went through the door I thought this was no castle for my dad, this was a castle for a villain.”

You can hear Tiarri’s full podcast, along with podcasts from other winners, here.
