826 Valencia is thrilled to announce the November Teacher of the Month, Monica Galvan! Ms. Galvan teaches third grade at Buena Vista Horace Mann, a K-8 Spanish Immersion school and a close partner of 826 Valencia. At BVHM, Ms. Galvan uses creative strategies to help her students improve their reading and writing, and to have fun learning.
Ms. Galvan infuses her classroom with joy and excitement. A parent says Ms. Galvan “took my son, a kid who hated school, and taught him to love learning again in a classroom setting.” That is no easy feat! She is also able to develop strong relationships with her students and make them feel heard. One parent says of her son, “He feels valued in her class.”
By meeting each student where they are, Ms. Galvan helps her students grow as learners. A parent confirms, “My son is far more patient with his writing – a task that has been a tremendous obstacle to him for years.” Ms. Galvan also sends homework letters to each student, providing specific feedback on their writing. “My daughter gets excited and loves to read what the teacher has written back every week,” another parent says.
Ms. Galvan provides resources to parents as well. One parent says, “She talks with parents about the different options they have to help their children succeed in school.” For example, Ms. Galvan helps her students access computers and library cards. She also communicates with parents about their children’s behavior through an app. One parent remarks, “I have felt very included in my son’s education this year.”
A current student of Ms. Galvan’s praises, “Gracias Maestra por su entrega en mi aprendizaje y por impulsarme a ser cada dĂa major.” (Thanks for your devotion to my learning, and for pushing me to be better every day.) 826 thanks Ms. Galvan as well for all that she does for her students and for her community!
