Winter warmer: new reading material from 826

“Who stands next to a bored teenage girl with a match?” Pick up a copy of The Day My Boots Exploded at the Pirate Supply Store to find out.

The winter publishing season may be our shortest, but it’s one of our most productive. This month, we have three new publications hitting the shelves. Our in-house newspaper, the Valencia Bay-farer, just released its 52nd issue, covering topics important to young journalists, ranging from the recent MLB trades, to economics in Russia, to groundbreaking research in hoverboard design.

It’s Not a Secret, the first chapbook to come out of our new Writers’ Room at Mission High, collects personal histories from eleventh- and twelfth-graders. The essays reflect on identity, cultural history, etymology of given names, and the importance of remembering shared family stories.

And last but not least, our Writing and Publishing Apprentices workshop produced The Day My Boots Exploded, a chapbook of short fiction and poetry from young writers ages 13–18. The collection features a poem about sneakers, a sneak peek at a student’s novel-in-progress, and a title story that contains the line “Who stands next to a bored teenage girl with a match?” Pick up a copy at the Pirate Supply Store to discover how the story pans out.
